Air Ambulance Appeal
I look forward to the end of half term when about half the house have promised to bring in £15 each towards the target of £765 for the Air Ambulance Appeal. We have £215 already, and £340 promised - which is still a shortfall of some £200.
Has anyone got time to search through jacket pockets and behind cushions for some forgotten banknotes in need of a good home ?

Sunny afternoon

There was inter-House cricket this afternoon. Let's not dwell on the scores: it's not the winning, is it, but the taking part. Liam Collins opened the bowling, with style - and Tom Thornton-Smith maintained the attack from the other end.
Others from Burr , like Ed Bowers, were playing tennis for the College. Some recognised the teacher from Abingdon who brought them over - Mr John Winters, a former Burr tutor, now Deputy Head of the Maths Department there.
The this evening the ICT Department had a barbecue for all those with public exams in the subject. The Upper Sixth, including a thoughtful Rob Lessman have yet to take theirs, while the Lower Sixth and Year 11 have both finished. One candidate delighted Mr Foakes and I with the comment that "You know, we'd revised some of those questions !"

Athletics season starts well

This week saw the start of the inter-house Athletics competition - there are two days of standards and then the Championships. It's an opportunity for Burr to overtake Welsh, who lead us by two points in the Bladry Trophy for inter-house sport through the year.
Special mention for Matthew Smith who injured a muscle at the top of his hip while sprinting the 100m, but kept going. Miss Stanley (Burr tutor and award winning photographer) happened to catch the moment.

Junior rowers' success

Mr Keith Settle reports:
Just to report from Saturday:
The J14A octo were a true credit to the school. The timetable was very drawn out with 3 races set over 8 hours and the boys behaved brilliantly and with good humour throughout the day. In the first round they dominated Tiffin A and took an easy victory. In the Semi-Final they drew a very strong crew from Dulwich College. They soon realised that Dulwich were not going to be an easy adversary to beat and yet the boys rose to the challenge with both crews level down the whole course. A final burst from Shiplake allowed us to win by a canvas. In the final we drew St George’s College (2nd placed crew at the schools head). Again the boys realised this would be tough and again they raised their game and produced a spectacular race to beat St George’s by half a length, resisting an impressive push from St George’s in the final 100m. To quote the commentator, ‘the St George’s crew looked incredibly good; but the Shiplake crew looked exceptional’. The boys have won their first ever rowing pot and have had confidence boost for National Schools next week.

CCF Field Day
The Royal Navy section deployed in a range of vessels, from a narrow boat to open canoes, during Field Day on the Thames on Tuesday. Exercises included man overboard drills; mooring at locks, muddy banks and jetties; cooking lunch, and an observation test which revealed that it could cost twice as much (£1000 maximum fine) to leave uncollected dog poo than to continue drinking alcohol after being asked not to by a police officer, on the Thames Path in Reading. The Army deployed to woods nearby and did strange tactical things, so well cammed up they are hard to see.
The RAF went to visit Odiham where their visit to this important helicopter station included the Fire Section and Air Traffic Control.

More religion
It's a spiritually oriented week in Burr. Head of College Adam Middleton (tall bloke, second from left - far left is Alex Wallis, head Chapel Warden, keeping an eye on everyone else) is one of several Burr boys and one girl (Becca Walmsley) aiming for confirmation on Sunday. They left this afternoon for an overnight retreat to Dorset and Wiltshire, with Mrs Lowndes helping with the driving.
