House Council Minutes

Burr House Council Meeting Minutes
February 3rd 2014

Attended by: Mr. A. Dix, Matron, Barney Aldridge (Yr 12), George Robinson (Yr 11),
George Emeny (Yr 10) and Alex Embleton (Yr 9)

The following points were discussed:
  • The minutes were read from the last meeting to see what had been acted on/approved?
  • George Emeny said that the toilets on the Yr 9/10 landing were still not left in a good state.
  • Evening activities (from last meeting) the group felt that maybe there could be something different. Movie night on a Wednesday was popular and it would be good to have that back.
  • Barney asked if anything had been done about the flags that had gone missing from the Day Room? Matron explained that she had tried to find a supplier but with no luck. Companies didn’t want to supply one flag from each country.
  • Year 12’s wanted to know if the internet could be on all night on a Saturday. House rules are that bedtime on a Saturday is 11:30pm therefore the internet time will remain as is.
  • Broken light in the Yr 12 bathroom.
  • Bread bags are being torn open in the middle and then bread being wasted as a result.
  • Shower heads not working well in Yr 12 bathroom. Matron to advise Maintenance to get them de-scaled.
  • A discussion took place whether it would be a good idea to have leg rests and cushions in the Day Room. It was decided that these things would probably be mis-used and therefore best to leave as is for now. Also is the coffee table used for the correct purpose? It was thought that if it was taken away it could potentially leave an area where boys could use it as a ‘play area’.
  • Could there be bean bags in the Orangery? ... was there enough space for these? Sofa is not in a very good condition. Matron to investigate to see if she can mend.
  • The Green re-cycling bins don’t seem to be used correctly. People throw anything in them.
  • Please could the House have the new Fifa 14 game? ... costing about £40.  Also need more controllers (cordless?) for the playstation so that 4 people can play at one time.
  • BT Sport for Burr House? – It costs £12.50 a month. It was thought that the House should discuss whether a package can be dropped from Sky? Fifa 14? It is a lot of money over a year with Sky already costing a lot of money. Ask House what they want to do/prefer?
  • George Emeny suggested that one of the toasters be moved to make it easier for people to spread out during Break.
  • It was also discussed if Burr could get their own washing machine?  Matron thought that we receive an excellent service from the school laundry. Turnaround with washing was usually within 48 hours. Often boys who needed urgent kit go and ask Anne and Sue if this can be done. A good idea though – they are in College Yr 13. Can revisit this when gym has been added to see if there would be space and investigate the practicalities of it.
  • Surround Sound – This was thought to be a very good idea, especially when watching films, matches etc. This option versus BT Sport?
  • Barney asked if the House wake up bell could be changed to ten past 7 for the 6th form? Mr. Dix thought that the bells couldn’t be separated however organisation and tidiness will continue to be monitored to see if boys could have an extra 10 minutes in bed.
